03/04/24 (Agence Europe) – On the evening of Tuesday 2 April, the European Union expressed its concern about the legislation passed by Israeli MPs on 1 April giving the government temporary powers to prevent foreign media networks from operating in Israel. Benyamin Netanyahu has pledged to take “immediate action” against Al Jazeera. “Freedom of the press must be guaranteed everywhere, including in wartime contexts, where the work of journalists and media professionals is essential to provide the public with accurate and timely information”, stressed the spokesperson for the European External Action Service in a press release. Highlighting that “too many” journalists had lost their lives and that hundreds of others had been injured since the start of the conflict in Gaza, he strongly condemned their murders and reiterated the need to guarantee their safety.
