On Wednesday 10 July, the European Commission announced that it had added the XNXX website to its list of ‘Very Large Online Platforms’ (‘VLOPs’) under its Digital Services Act (DSA).
This is the 25 designation since the implementation of the DSA. Three other pornographic sites were also designated last December (see EUROPE 13318/8).
These three platforms were subsequently asked by the Commission to provide clarification on their measures to protect minors and combat illegal content and gender-based violence (see EUROPE 13431/5).
As a ‘VLOP’, XNXX is required to comply with a whole series of strict rules, in particular relating to the protection of minors and the type of content to which minors may have access.
“These obligations include the adoption of specific measures to empower and protect users and to prevent minors from accessing pornographic content online, including by means of age verification tools”, the Commission explained in detail in a press release.
XNXX must comply with these rules within four months, by mid-November. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
