On Wednesday 10 July, the EU Health Emergency Response Authority (HERA) presented to the Critical Medicines Alliance (CMA) the main findings of a technical report assessing vulnerabilities in the supply chain for critical medicines (see EUROPE 13398/4).
This report will serve as a basis for further action to strengthen the security of supply of an initial tranche of 11 critical medicines on the EU list. It will help the Alliance to recommend possible actions to anticipate, prevent and treat shortages of essential medicines.
The report concludes that there is a need to build resilience by diversifying supply sources, improving production capacity and developing robust risk management frameworks to effectively manage economic and market variability. It makes a valuable contribution to EU bodies to help them deal more effectively with potential shortages of the medicines concerned.
In October 2023, the Commission adopted a communication containing a wide range of actions. The Union’s list of critical medicines includes more than 200 active substances deemed critical on the basis of therapeutic criteria.
