27/06/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 27 June, a new step was taken regarding the EU’s withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty, as the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, represented by the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council on behalf of the Union, gave written notice of this withdrawal to the depositary of the Energy Charter Treaty. This notification follows the decisions to withdraw the EU and Euratom from the Treaty and to modernise, adopted on 30 May (see EUROPE 13420/2). Member States wishing to remain contracting parties will be able to support the modernisation of the Treaty in a vote at the next Energy Charter Conference in the autumn. The withdrawal will take effect one year after the depositary receives the notification. (PLD)
