The European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, visited Mozambique on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 June to deepen the EU-Mozambique partnership and launch the ‘Global Gateway’ initiative on digital inclusion.
On Wednesday on X, the Commissioner announced the creation of two ‘Tech Hubs’ aimed at facilitating digital inclusion, employment opportunities and entrepreneurship for Mozambicans, as part of the ‘Vamoz Digital Global Gateway’ project, with funding of €13 million from the European Union.
Ms Urpilainen’s visit to Mozambique has also been focused on sustainable development, with a meeting in Maputo with private sector players. In a press release issued on Tuesday, the European Commission indicated that “new possibilities” were being explored with this sector as part of the ‘Global Gateway’ development aid strategy (see EUROPE 13364/20).
Finally, on Wednesday morning, the European Commissioner met European military personnel tasked with building the resilience of the Mozambique Armed Forces in the face of the armed groups perpetrating violence in the province of Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country.
Last May, the EU announced the extension of this EU military training mission (EUTM Mozambique) until June 2026 (see EUROPE 13409/24). (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
