On 14 June, the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E) published its ‘Summer Outlook’ report on seasonal adequacy, assessing Europe's security of electricity supply for the summer of 2024. The report does not identify any major risk of inadequacy, but stresses the need for supervision in Cyprus, Malta and Ireland due to their weak interconnection.
The assessment, carried out in cooperation with the European Transmission System Operators (TSOs), uses simulations to analyse different scenarios, taking into account factors such as wind, temperature and production unit outages.
The findings confirm that there are sufficient resources to meet electricity demand during the summer, although Ireland's ageing fleet of power stations poses some risks of inadequacy in the event of blackouts during periods of low wind generation. Risks have also been identified in Malta and Cyprus, in the event of adverse weather conditions.
ENTSO-E highlights the improved accuracy of the analysis this year, thanks to a new climate database in cooperation with the Copernicus Climate Change Service and another pan-European market modelling database.
