A report, commissioned by the Council of Europe under the European Union/Council of Europe Joint Programme “Equality and Freedom from Discrimination for Roma” (EQUIROM), shows how the portrayal of this minority on Bulgarian, Greek, Italian and Romanian television contributes to reinforcing the prejudices to which they are subjected.
Published on 18 June as part of “No Hate Speech Week”, this report includes recommendations aimed at eradicating the negative portrayal of the Roma in the media, in particular by giving them the opportunity to be represented, providing positive examples of their inclusion and avoiding their portrayal as a homogenous group.
In addition, on Wednesday 19 June, five European journalists received the Journalism Excellence Awards for their unprejudiced work in presenting a positive image of the Roma.
“Searching for the truth and trying to tell the untold stories, to strive to give a voice to those who would not have it without you”, European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová told them in a video message.
