LinkedIn limits its advertising targeting as a result of a DSA complaint

“LinkedIn will no longer allow advertisers to target its European users with ads based on LinkedIn group names, which may contain or reveal sensitive categories of personal data such as sexuality, political opinions or race”, announced the European Digital Rights Network (EDRi) on Friday 7 June.

This decision comes after EDRi and three other fundamental rights protection associations filed a complaint with the European Commission in February 2024, claiming that this practice violated the rules of the Digital Services Act (DSA) (see EUROPE 13371/25).

For these associations, LinkedIn’s targeted advertising is “an invasive form of profiling and targeting, based on sensitive categories of personal data”.

Last March, the Commission asked the social network for further information on the ban on advertising based on the use of personal data and on the transparency of such advertising. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
