European Commission asks Bulgaria and Poland to raise their climate ambitions in their national energy and climate plans

On Friday 26 April, the European Commission published its assessment of Bulgaria and Poland’s plans to update their National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), calling on them to raise their ambitions in line with the EU’s 2030 targets.

These two publications follow similar assessments for 24 other EU countries. For the European Commission, the national energy and climate plans are essential for achieving the 2030 energy and climate objectives, as they describe the national contributions and measures for implementing the legislation recently adopted as part of the ‘European Green Deal’.

In its December communication, the Commission stressed that the current NECPs are insufficient to achieve the greenhouse gas reduction targets (see EUROPE 13317/5).

It calls on all EU countries to step up efforts to reduce emissions, increase the use of renewable energies and improve energy efficiency.

Last week, the Commission closed infringement proceedings against Bulgaria and Poland for late submission of plans (see EUROPE 13319/33).

Austria is now the only EU country not to have submitted its updated draft NECPs. The final updated NECPs are expected by 30 June.
