On Monday 29 January, the European Commission announced that it had approved Romanian State restructuring aid worth €95.3 million for the national public airline TAROM to help it restore its long-term viability. The Commission stresses that the aid will be granted while keeping distortions of competition to a minimum. Following the opening of the Commission’s in-depth investigation in July 2021, Romania modified TAROM’s restructuring plan, which was initially notified to the Commission on 28 May 2021.
The new restructuring plan now includes a debt write-off of around €49.53 million (RON 246.19 million) corresponding to the amount of rescue aid authorised by the Commission in February 2020, plus interest, as well as a capital injection of around €45.77 million (RON 227.50 million).
The Commission examined these measures in particular under the guidelines on State aid for rescuing and restructuring non-financial undertakings in difficulties. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
