Nuclear industry calls on G7 to take long-term measures to deploy nuclear energy

As the G7 energy and climate ministers meet in Turin on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 April, the nuclear industry, including NuclearEurope, on Monday called on the G7 governments to set out clear plans for nuclear energy deployment.

The signatories want measures to be taken to achieve the EU’s target of 150 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050, as well as the target of tripling nuclear capacity worldwide, set by several states at COP28 (see EUROPE 13313/16).

The key actions required include establishing long-term policies to extend the operating life of existing reactors, providing clear financing mechanisms for investors, and ensuring access to national and international climate finance mechanisms for nuclear development.

The signatories also call for nuclear power to be included in financial institutions’ investment portfolios, for nuclear power and the fuel cycle to be identified as a sustainable investment, and for investment in nuclear research to continue.
