09/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced, on Tuesday 9 April, that it had added ‘Μέλι Κισσούρι/Meli Kissouri’ flower honey from Greece to the Community register of protected designations of origin (PDO). This is a flower honey produced in the Karystia region by bees foraging on purple heather (Erica manipuliflora or Erica verticillata). It comes in liquid or crystallised form. Protection of the designation ‘Μέλι Κισσούρι/Meli Kissouri’ is sought for the entire geographical area of the municipality of Karystos, located in the regional unit of Evia, which includes the municipal units of Karystos, Kafireas, Marmari and Styra. The ‘Μέλι Κισσούρι/Meli Kissouri’ has a slightly bitter taste, is dark in colour with coppery red undertones and has an intense, lingering aroma. (LC)
