MEPs approve proposal for EU’s withdrawal from Energy Charter Treaty

09/04/24 (Agence Europe)Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) approved the European Commission’s proposal to withdraw the EU from the Energy Charter Treaty (see EUROPE 13384/10) by 58 votes to 8 with 2 abstentions on Tuesday 9 April, one month after the EU Council also gave the green light to the proposal (see EUROPE 13366/9). The MEPs will vote at a plenary session in Strasbourg between 22 and 25 April. The European Commission expects the withdrawal to be finalised by the end of May. A total of 11 Member States have already announced or finalised their withdrawal: Germany, France, Luxembourg, Spain, Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia. (PLD)
