On Tuesday 9 April, the European Commission announced that it had launched a call for applications to set up the EU agri-food chain observatory.
The creation of this observatory was one of the measures announced in mid-March to strengthen the position of farmers in the supply chain (see EUROPE 13380/4).
The creation of this observatory should make it possible to increase transparency on pricing, cost structures and the distribution of margins and added value in the supply chain while respecting confidentiality and competition rules.
The observatory will have to develop methods to assess and monitor the structure of costs and the distribution of margins and added value throughout the food supply chain. It will bring together up to 80 members, representing national authorities responsible for agriculture, fisheries or the food supply chain, as well as organisations representing stakeholders, including farmers, input providers, the food industry, traders, transport, retail and consumers. The observatory is due to hold its first meeting in July 2024. The call for applications is open until 13 May. Organisations who apply must be registered in the Transparency Register.
