09/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced, on Tuesday 9 April, that it had approved an investment of over €10 million from the Cohesion Fund for the renovation of 14 trains on the Athens metro line, in particular line 1, which runs from the Piraeus region to Kifissia. The investment kicks off the first circular economy project in Athens, giving new life to obsolete trains and ensuring the recycling of existing materials, while providing local citizens with more reliable public transport. This modernisation will extend the life of the trains by around 25 years. The project will also have a number of beneficial effects on the environment, including energy savings: Athens can expect a reduction in air pollution and noise levels thanks to the modernised trains.
