19/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 19 March, the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties approved by 45 votes to 5 with 4 abstentions (see EUROPE 13362/3) the Interinstitutional Agreement on the new rules for the collection and transfer of passenger data known as API (Advanced Passenger Information). They will oblige air carriers to systematically collect and transmit passenger data to the competent authorities, and will apply to flights arriving in an EU country from a third country and, under certain conditions, to flights departing from an EU country. The data collected will include the passenger’s name, date of birth, nationality, passport details and flight information. The data will be retained for 48 hours, and a further 48 hours if a passenger fails to appear at a scheduled border crossing point or to facilitate a journey.
