19/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – The Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Nazhat Shameem Khan, told the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights on Tuesday 19 March that the ICC was strengthening its teams to work on the situation in the Middle East. “A major priority is the situation in Palestine”, she explained. She recalled that the ICC had jurisdiction to investigate events related to the actions of Hamas on 7 October 2023 and acts currently being committed in Gaza. “The Prosecutor is working to reinforce the Palestinian team, because we know how much the world expects tangible results on Palestine”, explained Ms Khan, adding that the ICC was determined to produce “tangible and rapid” results. It has been investigating war crimes committed in the Palestinian territories since March 2021. (CG)
