On Tuesday 19 March, the members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) approved the text of the provisional agreement on the directive introducing due diligence for companies (20 votes in favour, 4 against). The Member States finally gave the green light to a revised text on Friday 15 March (see EUROPE 13372/9).
Despite the significant changes made to the provisional agreement, MEPs backed the text. “It is high time that this legislation is adopted, to stop corporate abuse and to give companies clarity in what is expected of them”, said the text’s rapporteur, Lara Wolters (S&D, Dutch).
The whole Parliament must now vote on the text so that the EU Council can then adopt it. During a debate on Tuesday 12 March, the EPP, ECR and ID groups widely attacked the directive and its implications (see EUROPE 13370/20).
