Provisional political agreement on ‘Packaging and Packaging Waste’ Regulation validated by MEPs in European Parliament committee

19/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – MEPs on the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) validated, on Tuesday 19 March, the Interinstitutional Agreement reached between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on 4 March (see EUROPE 13364/8) on the ‘Packaging and Packaging Waste’ Regulation. The Member States’ ambassadors to the EU had already given the green light to the provisional political agreement on Friday 15 March (see EUROPE 13372/1). As a reminder, the text, which has been the subject of intense lobbying, provides, among other things, for 100% of packaging to be designed as recyclable starting in 2030 and validates the planned disappearance of ultra-light plastic bags by the same date.
