14/07/2023 (Agence Europe) – The Commission referred Sweden to the Court of Justice of the EU on Friday 14 July for failure to transpose EU rules on firearms, in particular those relating to the technical specifications of alarm and signalling weapons, according to a press release. “Implementing Directive 2019/68 establishes technical specifications for the unique marking of firearms and their essential components under the codified Firearms Directive (Directive (EU) 2021/555). Sweden had not fully transposed the Directive by 17 January 2020, which jeopardises the Directive’s objective of strengthening public security throughout the Union”. The Commission launched infringement proceedings against Sweden in May 2020 by sending a letter of formal notice, followed by a reasoned opinion in February 2022. (SP)
