EU and UN reaffirm importance of their cooperation

On Thursday 13 July, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, underlined the importance of cooperation between their two institutions at the second EU-UN High-Level Dialogue in La Hulpe (Belgium).

This dialogue, which is now an annual event, demonstrates the importance of our partnership. We live in an increasingly multipolar world. This requires strengthened forms of multilateral cooperation and governance, anchored in international law. The EU must be an essential pillar of this new world order”, explained Mr Guterres.

Our institutions both transcend national borders and interests. We believe in the need for international consensus and action. We believe in it above all because it is necessary to meet the major global challenges of our time”, added Ms von der Leyen.

At their meeting, the EU and UN representatives were due to discuss Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, climate change, the global digital transition and the rise of artificial intelligence, and actions to reinvigorate global efforts to achieve the sustainable development goals by 2030.
