23/02/2023 (Agence Europe) – EurEau, the European Federation of National Associations of Water Services which represents public and private drinking and wastewater service providers, welcomes the proposed revision of the ‘Urban Wastewater Treatment’ Directive (91/271/EEC)—especially its reinforcement of controlling pollution, in particular micropollutants, at source—in a position paper published on Thursday, 23 February (see EUROPE 13051/2). Nevertheless, EurEau is calling for the timetables to be changed so that the sector can comply with the new requirements. Given the significant investments that will be required of the European water sector, the federation considers it to be of the utmost importance to first invest where it brings the greatest benefit to the environment. EurEau laments that the proposed revision would be at the expense of local circumstances and the proportionality achieved in the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
