The European Commission announced on Thursday 23 February the forthcoming signature of grant agreements worth €235 million with 25 projects selected under the Horizon Europe Widening Participation Programme.
Twelve of these projects participated in the 2022 ‘Teaming for Excellence’ calls and ten projects participated in the first ‘Excellence Hubs’ calls, three were placed on the reserve list.
The ambition of these programmes is to boost the research capacities and ecosystems of the thirteen countries participating least in Horizon Europe, the ‘widening countries’, and to improve their inclusion in European networks. This is one of the objectives of the new European Research Area.
European funding should be used as a lever for the winners to create new hubs of excellence in research and innovation and to modernise existing hubs by setting up transnational strategic partnerships and establishing synergies with other sources of funding, including the European structural funds.
The next ‘Teaming for Excellence’ call is open until 12 April 2023. Its indicative budget is €16 million. The next call for ‘Excellence Hubs’ will open on 28 September 2023 until 7 March 2024. Its indicative budget is €60 million.
