Following the entry into force of the Digital Services Act (DSA) on 16 November (see EUROPE 13064/18), the European Commission announced, on Tuesday 22 November, the creation of the new European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency.
The main purpose of this future centre will be to support the implementation of the new provisions that are included in the DSA by providing technical and scientific expertise.
In addition, the future centre, which will be based in Brussels, will have to help the European Commission to assess whether the algorithms used by the very large online platforms and other search engines operate in accordance with the risk management requirements of the DSA.
The European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency will be operational by the first quarter of 2023. Furthermore, a recruitment campaign for experts in the field of data, design and algorithmic auditing is underway. This campaign will end on 9 January.
As a reminder, the DSA, which was formally adopted by the European Parliament on 5 July (see EUROPE 12986/3), is intended to put in place new rules, proportionate to the size of the company, to fight against illegal content online and to oblige large platforms to react quickly.
