22/11/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Union is standing in solidarity with Indonesia and is ready to provide assistance after the 5.6 magnitude earthquake that killed more than 160 people on the island of Java on Monday 21 November. “My condolences to the families and friends of the people who have been killed”, said the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, on the same day, while giving assurances that the European Commission is “closely following the situation on the ground” and stands ready to provide assistance, if necessary. Any country facing a disaster of this magnitude, whether an EU Member State or a third country, can request and receive assistance from the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), which is operated by the European Commission under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
