EU has held 5th consultation on human rights with Taiwan

The fifth EU-Taiwan Consultation on Human Rights took place on Wednesday 5 October and involved three representatives of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and Taiwanese Minister without Portfolio Lo Ping-cheng. According to the EEAS, this consultation reinforced “the great extent to which values are aligned and a strong commitment on both sides to comply with international human rights standards”.

The EU has commended the steps recently taken by Taipei to advance human rights and has shared its own experiences; for example, the implementation of its Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020–2024.

Representatives of the EEAS also noted the EU’s position on the death penalty and called on Taiwan to continue its efforts towards abolishing it.

The consultation session also addressed the rights of LGBTI persons and the protection of rights in the digital sphere. (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
