10/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – In a letter sent on 25 February to the Turkish Interior and Justice Ministers and published on Wednesday 10 March, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, calls on the authorities to halt the implementation of the Law on Preventing Financing of Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, pending the opinion of the Venice Commission due in June. Certain aspects of this law, which was adopted in December 2020, “threaten the very existence of human rights NGOs”, Dunja Mijatović says, pointing in particular to the amendments to the laws on associations and on the collection of aid introduced by the new legislation. She recalls that any measures taken by States to combat terrorism must comply with their obligations under international human rights law. (VL)
