Coalition of national climate advisory bodies calls on EU to establish ‘European Climate Change Council

The ‘Network of European Environment and Sustainable Development Advisory Councils’(EEAC Network) and twelve advisory bodies affiliated to the EEAC Network sent a joint letter to the European Union institutions on Tuesday 9 March to call for the establishment of a ‘European Climate Change Council(ECCC).

Established in ten Member States (Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden), the advisory councils signatory to the letter contribute to the creation of climate change policies, analyse the different pathways towards climate neutrality in their respective countries and make independent recommendations to policy makers.

Based on their experience, they consider that the European Parliament’s idea to establish an independent scientific body on climate change at EU level (a proposal made in the framework of the ‘Climate Law’ - see EUROPE 12568/6) could “create added value”.

In their view, this added value would come in particular from the fact that the ECCC could: - give independent and scientifically based policy recommendations; - provide a holistic and cross-sectoral perspective; - create coherence between policies and the EU’s long-term goal of climate neutrality by 2050; - provide a useful and valuable voice in the public debate and ensure better coherence between European and national policies.
