Greens/EFA Group look to future Portuguese Presidency of EU Council for country by country reporting

After unsuccessfully urging the German Presidency of the EU Council to put the issue of ‘country by country reporting’ (CBCR) back on the agenda of the Competitiveness Council, the Greens/EFA MEPs are now turning their attention to Portugal, who will take over the Presidency from Germany on 1 January (see EUROPE 12601/23).

In a letter sent on Friday 27 November, they asked them to prioritise this proposal during their Presidency and to explicitly name their objective of reaching an agreement over this in their work programme.

According to the MEPs, Austria’s change of position to now favour the text – which would oblige companies to make public certain accounting data such as their turnover – thereby creates an opportunity to obtain the majority required for its adoption (see EUROPE 12379/13).

The Portuguese Presidency faces six important months in the field of taxation and money laundering with ongoing international negotiations at the OECD level, a new leadership in the United States, and new Commission proposals”, the letter says.

The MEPs also expect the Portuguese Presidency to achieve progress on other fronts, such as environmental taxation, a minimum effective tax rate, stronger criteria for the European “black” list of non-cooperative jurisdictions, and reform of the EU code of conduct on business taxation.
