T&E believe no sustainable recovery can be achieved without abolishing free emission allowances granted to airlines

30/11/2020 (Agence Europe)Abolishing the free emission allowances granted to airlines under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS - see EUROPE 12560/15) could raise a billion euros a year, according to a report unveiled on Sunday 29 November, which had been carried out by the research institute, the Öko-Institut, at the request of the Transport and Environment (T&E) organisation. This money could be used to develop green aviation fuels, emphasised the report, which also details a series of solutions to “strengthen” the EU aviation ETS. In mid-November, the latter committed itself to a target of zero net CO2 emissions in the EU by 2050 (see EUROPE 12603/20). With a reform of the ETS looming (see EUROPE 12574/18), T&E believe that airlines will have to co-operate if they are to meet their environmental commitments.
