19/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 19 March, the EU Council of Ministers adopted two texts aimed at providing emergency measures for the fisheries sector in the event of a no-deal Brexit (see EUROPE 12213/17 and 12212/28). The United Kingdom alone abstained from voting. Without such emergency measures (compensation to fishermen for the cessation of activities and the granting of fishing licences for EU-27 vessels operating in British waters), the United Kingdom could prohibit European vessels from fishing in its exclusive economic zone as of next 29 March. This would have dramatic economic consequences for shipping companies accustomed to fishing in British waters. (LC)
