19/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – Germany launched the auction for the allocation of new 5G mobile phone frequencies on Tuesday 19 March, without explicitly banning the Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei, as Washington had requested. However, the government is working on a catalogue of measures valid for all service providers, such as a non-espionage clause or a requirement for laboratory tests for all components. The government could also consider, in some cases, "requesting the replacement of already installed equipment, which would mean being able to exclude Huawei from certain infrastructures, without pronouncing a formal ban", explains the newspaper Handelsblatt. For its part, the General Affairs Council adopted conclusions on the same day calling on the EU and the Twenty-Eight to take into account concerns related to cybersecurity in public procurement. It should be recalled that the Commission is preparing a coordinated response in the field of 5G network security, which will be presented in the wake of the European Council. (SPj)
