The EPP family will decide on Wednesday 20 March in Brussels at 3 p.m. on the fate of Viktor Orbán's Fidesz, with the Political Assembly meeting to decide on a suspension or exclusion of the EPP from the Hungarian Prime Minister's bench.
Viktor Orbán, the strong man from Budapest, will be invited to speak in a room of the European Parliament before the party's president, Joseph Daul of France, submits a proposal for a decision to suspend, exclude or “compromise”, as President Daul reportedly suggested on Saturday in France at a meeting of the Les Républicains party. Many EPP observers in the European Parliament remained uncertain on Tuesday evening about the intentions of the Party President and were careful not to bet on the outcome of the meeting.
But some only anticipated a suspension decision with specific criteria to be met, “and an exclusion later”, in the event that these conditions were not met.
Nearly 261 delegates will be invited to vote, and President Daul has confirmed that, without a vote on the 'Orbán' case, he could resign from his post. The delegations that will count the most in terms of votes are the German, Polish, Spanish and French delegations. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
