Council validates Interinstitutional Agreement on reduction of CO2 emissions from new heavy goods vehicles

22/02/2019 (Agence Europe)A procedural step was taken on Friday 22 February towards the contribution of new heavy goods vehicles and buses to the fight against climate change, towards clean mobility and innovation. The Ambassadors of the Twenty-eight to the EU (Coreper) endorsed the provisional inter-institutional agreement reached on 19 February on the proposal for a regulation imposing for the first time performance standards for the reduction of CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles: -15% by 2025 and -30% by 2030 compared to 2019 as binding targets, with fines in case of overrun. The text also provides incentives for clean vehicles - super credits until 2024 - as well as a mandatory 2% share of sales of low-emission or zero-emission vehicles from 2025 (see EUROPE 12197)(AN)
