Green light from Member States to Interinstitutional Agreement on measures on aviation safety in event of a no-deal Brexit

On Friday 22 February, the Member States' ambassadors to the European Union ('Coreper') approved the Interinstitutional Agreement on emergency measures that could be taken at European Union level regarding air safety in the event of the departure of the United Kingdom from the EU (Brexit) without agreement.

This agreement echoes the proposal for a regulation on the subject presented by the European Commission on 19 December last, among several texts to deal with some of the consequences of a no-deal Brexit (see EUROPE 12163). This text aims in particular to extend the validity of certificates for certain British aeronautical products, parts, equipment and companies by nine months.

Coreper adopted its negotiating position on 1 February last (see EUROPE 12185), 12 days before the European Parliament adopted its position in plenary session through a simplified procedure (see EUROPE 12193)

The two institutions should normally have entered into interinstitutional negotiations ('trilogues'), but the texts of Parliament and Council were the same. In fact, no meetings have taken place and their approach is therefore the final agreement.

After the green light from Coreper, it is up to Parliament and the Council of the EU to formally approve this text. (Original version in French by Lucas Tripoteau)
