With view to EU membership, Kiev tackles corruption

Brussels, 09/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - During a visit to Brussels, the head of Ukraine's security services in charge of counter-intelligence and law enforcement, Valeriy Khoroshkovski, spoke of his determination to combat corruption, including among the higher authorities. Considerable corrupt practice runs through parliament while other corrupt practices spring from the need for “economisation of relations with third countries”, the former Ukraine economy minister said. In order to achieve a “systemic settlement of these issues, there must be a change in our legislation”, and current rules must be clarified and severe penalties imposed, he asserted during a meeting on Tuesday 9 November, speaking to European journalists. He also went on to say that he would work for such provisions to be a part of the new legislative package to combat corruption. The package is currently being prepared. During his visit to Brussels, where he was to meet NATO officials in particular, Khoroshovski reaffirmed Ukraine's resolve to join the EU. “For the first time, our foreign policy is governed by the law of Ukraine” which means a move towards European integration, he said. In answer to questions, he rebutted criticism from the European Parliament on the rule of law and freedom of the press in Ukraine. President Viktor Yanukovich very clearly formulated the issue of accession to NATO, saying: “Accession to NATO should be delayed until our people are able to support it. Today there is no such support (…). On the other hand, support for EU accession is overwhelming”. (A.By./transl.jl)
