Committee vote on Juvin report

Brussels, 09/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament internal market and consumer protection committee voted almost unanimously (30 votes to one) to adopt the report by Philippe Juvin (EPP, France) on the effect of advertising on consumer behaviour. With the advances in new technology, new forms of advertising and more intrusive practices have developed, such as hidden advertising on internet, behavioural advertising and targeting of advertising. The report is critical that these new practices are becoming ever more commonplace and that legislation has not kept up with this trend. It wants law makers to bring in legislation that takes account of these new developments so that the most vulnerable, and in particular children, can be protected. “My colleagues and I call on the European Commission to look closely at existing legislation on advertising and to update it to take account of the issues specific to the development of the internet,” Juvin said. In a press release, the Greens/EFA Group says that it is, in general terms, satisfied with the report's recommendations which highlight the dangers of aggressive, even unfair, advertising. The report is due to be voted on during the plenary session which opens in Strasbourg on 22 November. (I.L./transl.rt)
