Brussels, 09/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - EU member states should do more to counter the CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) risk, states a document adopted on Monday 8 November by EU home ministers meeting in Brussels. Some terrorist organisations have shown definite interest in using CBRN agents or products and wish to recruit scientists specialised in this field, Council conclusions say. As a consequence of this, ministers call on EU member states to ensure that the CBRN risk is properly incorporated into their emergency response planning, in particular by taking its possible terrorist origins into account. They also call for these plans to take different response elements into account such as police, intelligence, rescue, health and communication, and for simulation exercises to be carried out. Finally member states are invited to inform their citizens of the risk inherent in CBRN threats. During their meeting, ministers adopted conclusions on innovative solutions for funding disaster prevention. They invited the Commission to present relevant initiatives on this by the end of 2012. Conclusions were also adopted on the prevention and reduction of health and social risks linked to the recreational use of illegal drugs. Finally, the Council approved a draft agreement between the European Police College (CEPOL) and the Croatian Police College. (B.C./transl.jl)
