US backs India's bid for seat, and European seat

Brussels, 09/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - US President Barack Obama's backing for India to have a permanent seat at the UN Security Council means that, as far as the United States is concerned, this reduces to zero the chance of having another permanent European seat, as Germany would like. Such is the analysis made by Italy's permanent representative with the UN, Ambassador Cesare Ragaglini, cited by the ANSA agency. Ragaglini considers that, from now on, the only solution for the European Union will be that of a single European seat. The ambassador suggests the EU should recognise that no single European country is able to have much clout in the international arena if it goes it alone. The US president's overture for India has caused quite a stir within the UN where many diplomats feel the US attempt is deferring the time of Security Council reform. (Gp./transl.jl)
