09/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - The home ministers' lunch hosted in Brussels on Monday almost turned into a free-for-all given the comments made in the press the day before by Swedish Immigration Minister Tobias Billström who said that Greece, which is faced with an immigration and asylum crisis, “does not even have a minister who handles these issues”. Discussions were extremely heated, one diplomat said after the meeting. In early November, Sweden suspended the return of asylum seekers to Greece, a country that is suffering from a massive illegal migrant influx from Turkey. Austria, Norway and Finland had also taken similar measures. Commissioner Cecilia Malmström announced she would present a document next spring on the question of intra-Community solidarity regarding asylum. (B.C./transl.jl)
