Brussels, 09/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) has targeted support for journalists in South-East Europe who are facing a twin crisis caused by political neglect, political pressure and the lack of trade union rights. “Unions and their members are facing a catastrophic situation caused by a toxic mix of social and professional problems,” said EFJ President Arne König. He went on: “There is a need to focus on practical actions, country by country, to address the crisis”. The EFJ has decided, at the same time, to terminate its three-year agreement with the WAZ Media Group, the German-based publisher which has holdings in eight countries of South-East Europe. The decision will take effect from February 2011. Plans for EFJ action in Bulgaria and Romania are currently being prepared. The EFJ also aims to continue support for a pilot initiative to promote social dialogue in Macedonia between journalists and management at major titles owned by WAZ. (I.L./transl.rt)
