Brussels, 09/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker told the European Parliament economic affairs committee on Monday 9 November (see EUROPE 10252) that he thought that “by 2014, Greece will meet the goals of the adjustment in fiscal positions which have been agreed”. The “rigorous” adjustment programme undertaken by the Greek government “is credible, remains credible and will be applied in fact,” he said, though not ruling out the possibility that Athens will have to announce further austerity measures following correction of national budgetary data. Replying to Jean-Paul Gauzès (EPP, France) who wondered if it would not have been better to restructure the Greek debt, Juncker said that he did not know of anyone in Europe who would consider such an option. In local elections at the weekend, the people of Greece gave their support to the Papandreou government, lifting the threat of early legislative elections had the Socialists been defeated.
