Electoral system: party list system; proportional representation; threshold of 5

In Germany, parties can present either national or regional lists. The parties generally choose the nationwide constituency, with the exception of the Christian Unions, who traditionally present candidates in certain Länder.

I - CDU-CSU

Baden-Württemberg: - outgoing Rainer Wieland (47), lawyer; - Daniel Caspary (28); - outgoing Karl von Wogau (63), lawyer and MEP since 1979, and Kangaroo Club President; - outgoing Elisabeth Jeggle (57); - regional representative Inge Grässle (43); - Doctor in medicine Thomas Ulmer (44); - company director Kurt-Joachim Lauk (57); - and jurist Andreas Schwab (31).

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: - outgoing Alfred Gomolka (62), geographer; - lawyer Kristin Vorpahl (28).

II. SPD

The first 35 SPD candidates for the European elections in June 2004 are as follows: - Martin Schulz, librarian, born in 1955 and member of the SPD since 1994; - Mechtild Rothe, teacher and member of the EP since 1984; - Ralf Walter, social worker, born 1958; - Dagmar Roth-Behrendt, legal expert, aged 50, at EP since 1989, chaired enquiry commission into BSE; - H Bullmann, political scientist, born 1956; - Konstanze Krehl, systems analyst; - Wolfgang Kreissl-Dorfler, farmer; - Erika Mann, 53; - Bernhard Rapkay, 53; - in tenth place and first newcomer on list: businessman of Turkish origin working in the travel sector, who is well-known in Germany: Vural Öger; born 1942 arrived in Germany aged 18, made a fortune and is now active campaigner for Turkey's accession to the EU; - European federalist Jo Leinen (56 ) in eleventh position; - Evelyne Gebhardt, translator, 50 ; - Willi Piecyk, police officer, 55; - Jutta Haug, 53 ; - former president of the EP and one of the current representatives at IGC, Klaus Hänsch (65 ) in the European Parliament since 1979; - Garrelt Duin, lawyer, born 1968; - Barbara Weiler, 57; - Heinz Kindermann, veterinary, born 1942;- Karin Jöns, journalist (51 ), particularly active in public health and fight against cancer; - Norbert Glante, engineer, born 1952; - Ulrich Stockmann, engineer, born 1951; - Lissy Groener, secretary (50 ), particularly active in women's rights; - Helmut Kuhne, 54 ; - Rosemarie Müller (55 ) one of the two rapporteurs on reform of European pharmaceutical legislation in this legislature; - Bernd Lange, teacher, 49 ; - in 26th place, Gehrard Botz (49 ) who served as an MEP between 1991-1999; - in 27th place, another newcomer: Brigitte Wucherpfennig; - Ozan Ceyhun (44) elected for first time in 1999 on the Greens list was and then joined the Socialist EP group and is now in 28th place; - Gabi Rolland (39 ) another newcomer; - Wilfried Kuckelkorn, installation engineer (60 ) is the final outgoing MEP on list; - Michael Zirpel (38 ), assistant parliamentarian at the EP; - Kertsin Westphal (41 ), local councillor; - Peter Simon (37 ), director of Europaburo in Mannheim; - Birgit Sippel (44 ), assistant parliamentarian at EP; - Jens Geier (43 ), assistant parliamentarian at EP in 35th place.

III. DIE GRÜNE

If an academic model of gender equality at the European elections were needed, it would surely be the list of the "Grünen", with the following twelve initial candidates for the elections of 13 June: the list is headed by the 48 year-old Rebecca Harms, a regional MP for Niedersachsen and former assistant to then MEP Undine Boch von Blottnitz between 1984 and 1988. Secondly, the outgoing Daniel Cohn-Bendit (59), returning to Germany having been elected in France in 1999, but the co-chairman of the Greens/FTA Group, who grew up in Alsace, has long been mixing the history of both countries. Then two others likewise outgoing: the psychologist Heide Rühle (55), and the farmer Friedrich-Wilheim Graefe zu Baringdorf (61). The party's co-chair Angelika Beer (46) is in fifth place, just before Cem Oezedemir, a former Bundestag member. In seventh place is Gisela Kallenbach (60), engineer and member of the cabinet of the mayor of Leipzig. 50 year-old sociologist Frithjof Schmidt is in eighth place, ahead of the outgoing Hiltrud Breyer (46), who has been an MEP since 1989. Berlin regional MP and specialist in transport issues, Michael Cramer (54), a teacher, is in tenth place. The outgoing Elisabeth Schroedter (45) is eleventh, and the twelfth on the list, Milan Horacek (58), is of Czech origins, and fled Prague during Soviet intervention. He is the director of the bureau of the Heinrich Böll foundation in Prague. It is also worth noting that former MEP Eva Quistorp is also on the list, but in 23rd position.

IV. PDS

Outgoing MEP Sylvia-Yvonne Kaufmann, choice for leading the PDS list for the European elections for June 2004. Aged 49, this scholar in Japanese was an MP in the former RDA and has been at the Bundestag since 1990. An Observer at the European Parliament between 1991 - 1994, she became a member in 1999 and is now seeking a second mandate. She has been very active at the two Conventions , which drew up the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the draft European constitution.

Also on the list: - outgoing MEP Helmuth Markov (52), engineer; - former president of the PDS Gabriele Zimmer ; - the pacifist Tobias Pflueger ; - Sahra Wagenknecht who is part of the communist alliance; - outgoing MEP André Brie (54), political scientist; - outgoing MEP Feleknas Uca (27), medical assistant; - Helmut Scholz.

V. FPD

Silvana Koch-Mehrin (33) heads the list of the liberal FDP, which is hoping for a return to the European Parliament after a ten year absence. The names of the first eight candidates are as follows: - Silvana Koch-Mehrin ; - Alexander Graf Lambsdorff ; - Jorgo Chatzimarkakis (of Greek origin); - Wolf Klinz ; - Willem Schuth (Dutch living in Germany), - Alexander Alvaro (of Portuguese origin); - Volker Krahmer ; - Dietmar Bachmann.

VI. PARTIES NOT REPRESENTED IN THE EP
