Electoral system: party list system with preferential vote; proportional representation; threshold of 4%
Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP): the party of Chancellor Schüssel opens its list with five outgoing MEPs: - Ursula Stenzel (59), former journalist and MEP since 1996; - Othmar Karas (46), former bank manager; - Reinhard Rack (59), Lecturer in legal studies; - Agnes Schierhuber (58 ), farmer; - Paul Rübig (51). Next in the list: - Richard Seeber (42), Head of the Tyrol Representation in Brussels; - outgoing MEP Hubert Pirker (55 ), teacher of pedagogy, who has been particularly active in campaigns on drugs, immigration and asylum; - Ulrike Funtan (26), office worker; - Erwin Schranz (54), legal expert; - Rainer Keckeis (46), Head of the Arbeiterkammer in Vorarlberg. Outgoing MEP Marialiese Flemming (70), legal expert in eleventh place.
Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreich (SPÖ): the six first places are headed by outgoing MEPs: Johannes Swoboda (57 ), legal expert, who entered the European Parliament in 1996; - Maria Berger (48), legal expert; - Herbert Bösch (50); - Christa Prets (56), games teacher; - Harald Ettl (53), trade unionist; - Karin Scheele (36). Next on the list: - Jörg Leichtfried (37), legal expert; - protestant theologian Gertraud Knoll (45) first woman pastor, who then had her own diocese in Austria.
Grüne - Die Grünen - Die grüne Alternative: - outgoing MEP Johannes Voggenhuber (54) who was also a very active Member of the European Convention; - Evelin Lichtenberger (50), member of the Nationalrat and Deputy Member at the European Convention, former minister of the environment in the Tyrol; - Marijana Grandits, who is involved in futher training and is a former member of the Nationalrat; - Monika Vana, local councillor in Vienna.
Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (FPÖ): - outgoing MEP H Kronberger (53), former journalist specialising in the environment; - lawyer Franz Grossmann, former national MP and Secretary of the Social Democratic Party SPÖ; - Councillor for culture under Mr Haider, Andreas Mölzer (51 ), former MP, who was also Editor-in-Chief of the "Kärntner Nachrichten", a newspaper in Corinthia between 1985-1990.
Martin: outgoing MEP H-Peter Martin (57), legal expert and former journalist, elected in 1999 on the Social Democratic list, now non attached after carrying out a vast demagogical campaign, especially in Germany and Austria denouncing the financial benefits enjoyed by MEPs. Star television presenter Karin Resetarits (42) is in second place on Martin's list.
Linke - Opposition für ein solidarisches Europa: a left list that is not for the instant represented at the European Parliament but which is planning on getting elected. The list is headed by journalist and anthropologist Leo Gabriel (58 ), expert on Latin American and anti-globalisation campaigner.
