SEPARATE SUPPLEMENT / Greece

24 seats

Electoral system: party list system in a single constituency; proportional representation; threshold of 3

Nea Dimokratia: the list of the Greek right is headed by the former defence minister Ioannis Varvitsiotis (71). He is followed by: former foreign affairs minister Antonis Samaras (53), the leader of the Politiki Anixi movement (the nationalist wing of the right); outgoing MEP Antonios Trakatellis (73), a doctor; outgoing Vice-President of the EP Giorgios Dimitrakopoulos (52); outgoing MEP Konstantinos Hatzidakis (39), a lawyer; outgoing MEP Rodi Kratsa (53), a sociologist; Ioannis Glavakis (55), an agronomic engineer; Maria Kassiotou-Panagiotopoulou (52), mother of nine and an expert on Byzantine lexicography; Georgios Papastamkos (49), former secretary of state for foreign affairs; Nikos Vakalis (65); sports journalist Manolis Mavrommatis; Margaritis Schinas (42), who has been head of Commissioner de Palacio's cabinet for the last five years.

PASOK: their recent defeat in the parliamentary elections has led the socialists to draw up a list of candidates mostly born after 1960. This is true of trades unionist Maria Matsouka (30), head of the youth section of the General Confederation of Greek Unions, who heads the list. She is followed by: lawyer and honorary ambassador Stavros Lamprinidis (42), head of the international centre responsible for promoting the Olympic truce; Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou (41), lawyer and former assistant to MEP, subsequently Commissioner, Christos Papoutsis; Stavros Arnaoutakis (48), mayor of Archanon in Crete; Aikaterini Batzeli, an economist and former assistant to the Vice-President of the EP Georgios Romeos; diplomat Panagiotis Beglitis (47); Evaggelia Tzampazi (44) who is involved in rights for the disabled (and is herself disabled); Nikos Sifounakis (55), an architect; Konstantinos Kartalis (42); Anny Podimata (42), a journalist; Konstantinos Botopoulos (42), a lawyer; Marilena Koppa (41), a teacher.

KKE: the orthodox communist list comprises: former MEP Thanasis Pafilis; Giorgos Toussas, Chairman of the Panellenic Union of Mechanics of Merchant Marine; Dimanto Manolakou.

SYN: the reform communists present the following list: Dimitris Papadimoulis; outgoing MEP Nikos Chountis (51); Maria Fragkiadaki.

DIKKI: originally created by PASOK dissidents, this left wing party had MEPs in the Parliament but following differences between the leaders is not certain to be able to stand. The list which was submitted comprises: Ilias Nikolopoulos, professor of constitutional law; theatre actor and regional representative Giorgios Pantzas; former MP Vassiliki Arapi-Karagianni.

Various other lists have been presented, but only one seems likely to reach the threshold of 3% required to have a Member elected. It was presented by the popular orthodox assembly (LAOS), whose list is headed by the journalist and former extreme-right MP Georges Karatzaferis (57).
