22/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a reply to a question from French Socialist Pervenche Berès, the European Commissioner for the internal market, Charlie McCreevy, indicated on Tuesday 21 November in an economic and monetary affairs committee at the European Parliament that producing a legislative proposal for introducing a statute for a European mutual would be useless if it were likely that it suffered the same fate as the previous one (EUROPE 9291). In 1992, the Commission launched a legislative initiative but no EU presidency had got the dossier moving and only two Member States were in favour of it, he explained. He pointed out that a study was being carried out at the Commission and advised all organisations concerned to put pressure on Member States to push the dossier forward and for MEPs to present an own initiative report, a suggestion that Ms Bères also took on board.
