Commission launches public debate on modernisation of employment law

Brussels, 22/11/2006 (Agence Europe) -Technological progress and globalisation have profoundly changed employment markets in the EU. New forms of employment, moving away from "traditional" full-time work, are already on the increase. These are necessary to face both globalisation and demographic ageing, but the Commission feels that it is important that the workers do not become the victims of this process. It is against this backdrop that it launched a major open debate, on Wednesday, on this question, based on the publication of a Green Paper. The aim of this exercise is to obtain authorised opinions on changes in the employment market. The objective is to prepare for the modernisation of employment law insofar as it comes under EU jurisdiction. The Member States and the social partners, and anybody affected by these issues, are invited to take part in the debate. The consultation period will end on 31 March 2007. The Green Paper can be consulted at the following address: http: //ec.europa.eu/employment_social/labour_law/docs/2006/green_paper_en.pdf. (ol)
