29/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - The book "Minority Protection and the Enlarged European Union: The Way Forward" , which has just been published by the Open Society Institute in Budapest, critically examines European Union policy on protecting minorities. It points out that, curiously, over recent years, the EU has restricted itself to minorities living in accession candidate countries. Experts who contributed to this book, edited by Gabriel N.Toggenburg, look at specific cases (such as those of the Rom and Muslims) and the instruments the Union has for carrying out a policy for protecting minorities. According to the authors, the enlarged EU has to come up with a real strategy in this area and also accept an effective divisions of labour with organisations such as the Council of Europe and the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe). The book also examines the Declaration of Bolzano sent to governments of the 25 Member States of the EU and available on: http://www.eurac.edu/pecede ( minority Protection and the Enlarged European union-The Way Forward.
