29/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - A small group of parliamentarians took part in the Parliamentary Conference last week on the WTO (EUROPE 27 November, p.11, and 26 November, p.16) where they criticised the "non-transparent" working methods of this conference. In a press conference, "A Façade of Democracy, MEPs Helmut Markov (GUE/NGL, Germany) and Caroline Lucas (British Green), as well as Carlos Baraibar from Uruguay and Venezuelan Dario Vivas were angry that "the same non-transparent and anti-democratic methods" had been used at the conference where the WTO "repeats the neo-liberal credo, as if Seattle and Cancun had never taken place". The four parliamentarians also deplored the final conclusions being adopted by "consensus", although a number of parliamentarians had proposed changes or clear opposition to the text.
