Eurostat revises Member States' debt and deficit upwards for 2003 - Greece's system a cause for concern, underlining need for greater means of control

Brussels, 23/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - Eurostat has published the revised figures for the deficit and public debt of the Member States of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Within the euro zone, the average deficit of the Twelve was 2.7% in 2003 (2.4% in 2002), and debt stood at 70.7% (as against 69.4% in 2002), but for the EU of 25, the comparison also shows the two criteria worsening (deficit of 2.8% in 2003 compared to 2.3% in 2002 and debt of 109.9% in 2003, against 102.4% in 2002)....
